What Is Ping and How Do You Read the Result?

How ICMP Echo measures reachability and RTT, why packets disappear, and when ping can mislead.

Measure a series, not one reply

On Linux/macOS, send a bounded set of probes:

ping -c 20 example.com

Look at typical RTT, variation, and loss. If the server blocks ICMP, missing Echo Replies do not prove HTTPS is down: test TCP connectivity and the HTTP response separately.

Check it with Net Utils

Use the relevant Net Utils tool and compare the structured output with your expected configuration. Public network data changes, so confirm important conclusions with a repeat test.
